Rihanna's Fenty is the Fashion House We've Been Waiting For
Robyn Rihanna Fenty, the queen of all things, has made history yet again. We have watched her blossom from a songstress, to a beauty maverick, and fashion icon - not to mention being ambassador of her country among a laundry list of other things. Our good sis is now also the first Black woman to launch a luxury brand with one of the most notable Parisian fashion conglomerates LVMH.
Louis Vuitton Moet Hennesst or Louis Vuitton SE was founded in the 1980’s and has ownership of some of the most iconic luxury brands from across the market including fashion house Christian Dior. It is an understatement to say that it is not a monumental accomplishment for Rihanna, to be not only the first Black woman, but the first woman PERIOD. We all know the corporate world is typically a man’s world, but this marks the opening of a very heavy door and we are all at the edge of our seats waiting to see what marvelous projects Rihanna has in store.
The LVMH fashion group which houses smaller conglomerates like Celine and Givenchy will now be adding Fenty to its list of in-house brands. We were given a preview of the collection this week on the new brand via Instagram, and I for one am beyond excited to see the bold silhouettes, deconstructed suiting, and fem-masculine realness she is serving up.
In an interview with the New York Times Style Magazine digital edition she opened up about the process of getting to establish her brand and how important it is that she remain true to her identity as she does so flawlessly with her other endeavors. With price points ranging from $400 to upwards of a $1000 with the pieces we’ve seen thus far it is apparent that she is bringing her A-game with everything from construction to visual presentation.
Fashion has been a very closed off industry when it comes to inclusivity and diversity; there are still a lot of barriers to be knocked down. Rihanna continues to be a champion of her people by going above and beyond to represent the culture in spaces where women of color are virtually non-existent, stating “You’re going to be black wherever you go, and I don’t know if it’s unfortunate or fortunate, because I love being black. So, sorry for those who don’t like it — that’s the first thing you see before you even hear my voice. There are also other factors: I’m young. I’m new to the family. I’m a woman. Those factors do come into play, but I will not apologize for them, and I will not back down from being a woman, from being black, from having an opinion."
As a child who grew up immersed in fashion, I am screaming at the thought of what is to come. The industry needed someone to shake things up and Rihanna is giving the girls what they needed. I think I speak for most of the world when I say take my coins sis, we are ready. Click here to read the full interview and see a preview of the collection.
