Latinas In The Music World
The Latin American Music Awards will be held Thursday, October 25th at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, CA. In honor of this year's ALL FEMALE hosts, the Los Angeles Film School hosted a panel of Latina superstars who have made quite the mark in the entertainment industry. The seminar lead by Leila Cobo, Billboard's Executive Director for the Latin division, lead the conversation in Spanglish to perfection.
Aracely Arambula who is a Mexican singer and Telenovela actress, spoke about the evolution of women in Spanish soap-operas. From the "helpless poor girl" roles to the powerful woman calling all of the shots, Aracely is proud of how far the portrayal of women in television has come. Puerto Rican 'Devious Maids' actress Roselyn Sanchez was charismatic, honest and fun when it came to answering the question of who her inspiration in life has been. "To be honest, not my mother," she laughed. "I love her to death but I can say I have learned from her mistakes."
Becky G and Leslie Grace, the youngest Latina chart toppers on the panel spoke about the impact of Reggaeton music and how women are multi-faceted and fierce in 2018. Becky, of Mexican descent and Leslie, Dominican, dominated the seminar in both Spanish and English explaining their experiences growing up in the music industry.
I had to save Mexican rock star Gloria Trevi for last, as her young spirit and in-your face demeanor had the audience laughing and crying at the same time. Trevi's very public scandals and tragedies have been unable to stop the talented singer, songwriter and dancer from the success she has achieved. The Mexican bad girl has had one of the most successful music tours, alongside superstar Alejandra Guzman, over the recent years. Trevi started her career in 1989 and is still making hits today.
Thanks to these ladies for being true inspirations. It is an honor to be a Latina woman and most of all; a strong, sensitive, ambitious, vulnerable and fierce woman in 2018.
